Subcontractors: Finding Fast but Quality Writers

There are often times, although sporatic, that I get all my clients wanting work at the same time. It’s a great problem to have, don’t get me wrong! However, it leads me to the realization that I cannot physically do all the work myself. Due to this, I created a “Jobs” page on my website http://www.qualitytechnicalwriting.com to have applicants send me their resumes and samples.

Although I have found a few that I can send work to because they are good writers, I am wondering if I am the only one out there willing to work hard, go the extra mile and get the deliverables done in record time. I have always thought about putting myself in the clients shoes, wanting the work done yesterday. I have a very quick turnaround time and even higher expectations of the people I sent work to as well. Is that really asking for too much?

Call it my New York mentality, since I was born and raised there. Call it my internal drive. Call it my endless enthusiasm for completion of a project. No matter what you call it, it is sad to see the laxidasical attitude of many technical writers who are just happy to have some work but don’t want to actually do it efficiently. Am I the only one who prefers a fixed fee to hourly rate? Am I the only one who is having problems finding subcontractors who are great writers, not those who are just getting into the field? Why doesn’t anyone have a quick turnaround anymore – don’t you want to get paid faster? Is it too much to ask for to have updates to a 20-40 page manual written up within a week’s time? It makes me wonder…
